A car caught fire on Route 1 under Hafnarfjall south of Borgarnes, creating significant traffic delays on the highway. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as the incident unfolded. The fire was first reported around 6:30 PM, leading to the closure of the road at Hafnarskóg. Traffic was allowed to resume just before 9 PM, meaning the road was closed for nearly two and a half hours.

The driver noticed the fire and quickly pulled over, calling the fire department for assistance. Fire crews arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames, after which clean-up operations began. According to local police, long queues of vehicles formed in both directions as a result of the road closure.

By around 7:45 PM, traffic was allowed to move in convoys. However, the road had to be closed again when a specialized tow truck arrived to remove the burned vehicle, a necessary precaution to ensure safety and prevent further accidents.

This situation is a reminder of the challenges posed by vehicular incidents on major roads, highlighting the importance of swift emergency responses and the coordination between fire services and local authorities to minimize disruptions.
