Severe car accident closes Suðurlandsvegur in South Iceland near Gígjukvísl

South Iceland’s main road, Suðurlandsvegur, has been closed west of Gígjukvísl due to a severe car accident. Two vehicles traveling from opposite directions collided near Lómagnúp.

Authorities from the South Iceland police report that there is a significant emergency response underway at the scene of the accident. A helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard has been dispatched to transport the injured individuals away from the accident site. As of now, it is unclear how many people were in the vehicles involved or the extent of their injuries.
