The renovation of Highway 15 in Kymenlaakso is finally set to take place. This stretch of road connecting Kotka and Kouvola serves as a critical route for both commuters and heavy traffic. During a visit to Kouvola on Monday, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne committed to funding the highway construction.

“I can confirm it will happen,” Ranne said, having previously hinted at this in the spring via social media. The estimated cost of the project is €122 million, pending approval from the government during the budget negotiations at the beginning of September.

Highway 15 has been awaiting renovation funds for over 20 years. According to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, this segment is described as unsafe and congested. On an average weekday, it accommodates between 6,500 to 10,200 vehicles, including 1,200 to 1,500 heavy-duty transports, highlighting its importance for traffic to and from the Haminan-Kotka harbor.

Ranne mentioned a consensus within the government regarding funding for the highway renovation, stating, “Last spring, we held discussions on re-evaluating infrastructure projects. A good agreement was reached to prioritize Highways 15 and 12.” Funding is also anticipated for the section between Lahti and Kouvola on Highway 12.

Renovations for Highways 15 and 12 could potentially commence as early as 2025 if the budget decisions are confirmed. The project aims to secure the initial €122 million, with an additional €46 million needed later. “It will come too,” Ranne assured, emphasizing the importance of launching this critical first phase.
