Bird life thriving in Mykinesi as puffins reclaim territory

Monday 12th 2024 on 12:28 in
Faroe Islands

Bird life in Mykinesi is experiencing positive developments, according to Silas Olofson, a bird expert who has recently studied the area. Since 2017, there has been a notable turnaround, with the first puffins that ventured out during that period now beginning to reclaim their territory and learn to navigate on their own.

The conditions in nature undoubtedly affect the puffin population, which is estimated to be around 60,000 breeding pairs, or perhaps even more, at present.

Notably, the path to the island has been closed since 2021, and Olofson points out that this closure has provided the birds with a sanctuary. Consequently, the puffins now dominate the area around the island.

Listeners can tune in to the full audio report from the news broadcast that aired on Sunday evening at 6 PM for more details on this topic.
