On Sunday evening in Jyväskylä’s Kuokkala district, 26-year-old Daniele Viscione witnessed a stabbing incident involving minors during his shopping trip. As he was heading home from the store, he heard loud screams. He noted that three to four younger individuals were involved, shouting at each other.

Viscione saw one young man covered in blood, while another had a bloody hand. “At that moment, it was unclear what had happened, but it later became clear that it was a stabbing,” he recounted. There were only a few people outside the pharmacy and a handful of customers on a nearby terrace when the altercation occurred. Viscione expressed shock at the seriousness of the incident, mentioning that he knows the victim, describing him as an active young person who enjoys sports.

The police have not disclosed further details regarding the investigation since their initial statement on Sunday. According to Crime Commissioner Anu Tervanen, the victim remains stable under hospital care, and no information about the ages of the victim or the suspect will be released. The police received a report of the stabbing at approximately 6:40 PM, indicating that a child under the age of 15 had been attacked outside the pharmacy. The victim was transported to the hospital but is not in critical condition.

Police apprehended the suspect, also under 15, nearby. Preliminary information suggests that a dispute between the two escalated into the stabbing. Since the suspect is below the legal age of criminal responsibility, the investigation will not lead to formal charges, and an abuse report will be filed to child protection services, notifying the guardians involved.

Viscione remarked on the troubling nature of youth violence, suggesting that young people may not fully comprehend the seriousness of their actions in the current media landscape, where dramatized violence is prevalent.

The principal of Kuokkala Unified School, Markku Juhola, stated that the incident is not related to the school, placing responsibility for communication regarding the matter solely with the police. Should a student from the school be involved, Juhola mentioned that the situation would be managed according to the school’s crisis plan.

Updates will follow as the situation develops.
