Starting school brings many new experiences for children, with fresh faces, adults, and buildings. For 5- or 6-year-olds, this transition can evoke a mix of excitement and nervousness. Livia Liss Malinsky Borup is one such child preparing to begin 0.A at Vestbjerg School near Aalborg. Her father, Jeppe Malinsky Borup, noticed her apprehension during their initial visit to the school’s aftercare program.

“The first day, as we cycled here, Livia talked non-stop, but upon arrival, it became clear she was feeling the weight of the newness,” he said. A 2019 study by Egmont Foundation revealed that approximately 40% of new students might feel uncertain about starting school. Parents also experience anxieties regarding their children’s transitions.

Livia’s mother, Michelle Malinsky Borup, expressed concerns about her daughter’s classmates and the potential for meaningful relationships. “It’s our first time navigating the school system as parents, and we aim to create a safe transition for her,” she noted.

Moreover, Michelle and Jeppe felt unease about whether they would receive the same updates about Livia’s day as they did from her preschool teachers. They now rely more on Livia to share her experiences.

Five-year-old August Bundgaard Ellerman is also set to start in 0.A. When asked about his feelings toward school, he responded confidently, “It’s going to be great!” His mother, Kristina Ellerman Jensen, feels reassured by his enthusiasm and the preparations he received, like encountering teachers and exploring the school environment ahead of time.

School principal Steffen Hessellund emphasized the importance of a secure transition for students. He noted that open communication with parents is equally crucial during this adjustment period.
