Members of His Majesty The King’s Guard recently embarked on an impressive hike to Kongen mountain in Romsdalen, part of the initiative “Kongeriket Romsdal.” This project aims to encourage more people to explore the region, advocating for guided tours to the towering peaks to ensure safe access to the mountains.

Bjørn Kruse, one of the certified guides, expressed his emotional reaction as the Norwegian flag was planted at the summit. Company sergeant Fredrik Kim Gresseth believes that the mountains in Romsdalen provide an ideal backdrop for His Majesty’s Guard to represent Norway. He described the trek as “the assignment of the year” and one of the best experiences of their lives.

The project encourages people to hike in the area, which features mountains such as Kongen (1614 meters), Dronninga (1544 meters), and Bispen (1462 meters), as well as a more family-friendly trail to Bispevatnet. Project leader Heidi Leren emphasized the importance of guided tours in steep and challenging terrains, indicating that they do not recommend solo hikes. The guides also enhance the experience by sharing historical and natural insights along the way.

Kruse commented on the strong sense of enthusiasm displayed by the guards, noting that their participation in the march exceeded expectations. He remarked on the special significance of the event for him as a former Swedish guard, highlighting the prestige of collaborating with what he considers “the world’s best” guard.

Gresseth reiterated the purpose of expanding access to the region’s mountains, particularly to divert foot traffic from more popular trails and to promote Norwegian nature, culture, and public health. Despite the demanding nature of the hike, he noted that such adventures are not unusual for the guard, who annually promote the regions they represent.
