One member of the South Korean group BTS, often referred to as the world’s biggest boyband, is currently making headlines. Member Suga, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, was recently arrested for driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol content of 2.27—approximately eight times the legal limit in South Korea. With this level of intoxication, the global star faces a prison sentence of two to five years and may also face a monetary fine.

BTS, known for setting numerous streaming and social media follower records, was named the world’s best-selling artist by IFPI in both 2020 and 2021. The group slipped to second place in 2022, overtaken by Taylor Swift. Currently, BTS is on a hiatus as its members are fulfilling their military service obligations.

On Tuesday evening, reports emerged that Min Yoon-gi was found lying next to an electric scooter in Seoul. He has since had his driving license revoked, and police plan to summon him for further questioning. In a social media post, Min Yoon-gi expressed remorse, stating that while no harm was caused to others or property, he accepts full responsibility for his actions and apologized publicly. He also noted his lack of awareness regarding the legality of riding an electric scooter while under the influence.

The agency behind BTS, HYBE, released an official apology, indicating that Min Yoon-gi, as a conscripted soldier, will face appropriate disciplinary actions, though specifics were not provided. Given BTS’s significant impact on the South Korean economy, there were discussions about exempting the members from mandatory military service, but these ended when the agency confirmed their enlistment plans in 2022. BTS is expected to reunite in 2025 following the completion of their military duties.
