Austrian intelligence services should have greater authority to monitor messaging apps, according to the country’s Chancellor. This statement follows the confession of a 19-year-old Austrian who planned a terrorist attack during a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized the importance of being able to decrypt messaging services such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram to ensure public safety. He remarked that such measures are crucial following the thwarted attack, which was a result of collaboration with international partners.

Austrian Interior Minister pointed out that existing legislation currently prohibits the surveillance of messenger communications, which hampers preventive efforts against potential threats. The Chancellor stressed that any increase in monitoring should be accompanied by legal oversight and should respect the principles of the rule of law.
