Emptiness felt by sports fans following summer events, psychologists say

Many people might be wondering, “Is this it?” after an eventful summer of sports that included the European Championships in athletics, the European Football Championships, and the Olympics. Following this week, many sports fans may feel a sense of emptiness – a phenomenon backed by psychology.

Expert psychologist Juho Mertanen explains that our nervous system and brains become accustomed to a constant stream of exciting events. When this rhythm stops, recovering from the neurotransmitter surge can take one to two weeks. This emotional response is not unique to sports; it also applies to various life events, such as attending festivals, getting married, or intensely following competitions.

Experiencing emptiness after a vibrant sports season isn’t inherently negative. Rather, it reflects an opportunity to recognize the peaks and quieter moments in life. “Olympics, held every two years, do feel special,” Mertanen says.

It’s important not to rush to fill this sense of emptiness. While uncomfortable, it’s a natural feeling; enduring it is part of life. Every emotion carries significant messages and roles. “One can certainly embrace feelings of emptiness and nostalgia, allowing the latter to work through reflections on past events,” Mertanen advises.

Reflecting on the experiences surrounding the Olympics can be beneficial. After significant competitions, it’s healthy to watch highlights, chat with friends or colleagues, and share experiences. This can reinforce social bonds and even inspire new interests in sports, as noted by Mertanen.

If feelings of emptiness or depression persist for weeks, it’s wise to speak with a trusted friend or a professional. Seeking help is especially important if one’s coping strategies become harmful.
