Seismic activity reported on Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland

Sunday 11th 2024 on 07:53 in
Iceland

Seventeen minutes ago, local reports indicate that seismic activity has been recorded on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Approximately 80 minor earthquakes have been detected near the magma chamber at the Sundhnúkur crater in the past day. The ground has significantly subsided in the town of Grindavík.

This seismic activity matches recent observations, according to a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Although the land continues to rise, it is doing so at a slower rate than before. The expert warns that if notable events occur, ground movements could happen more rapidly.

Additionally, some seismic activity has been reported near Grjótavatn, located northwest of Borgarnes, since yesterday afternoon. The strongest tremors recorded in this area have surpassed a magnitude of two. While minor earthquakes are common in this region, activity has increased somewhat since 2021.
