New music styles and artists are emerging in the realm of Sámi music. One notable figure in this niche genre is Vilho-Simon Mäkinen, known by his stage name Máŧŧarus. The 21-year-old from Ivalo creates Sámi deathcore, a unique blend characterized by raw vocal styles, chilling lyrics, and horrifying tales. Mäkinen expresses indifference to public tastes, noting, “You either really love it, or some say, ‘Ugh, this is terrible.’ I’m just doing my own thing,” he laughs.

His lyrics draw inspiration from old Sámi stories filled with eerie, unsettling themes that resonate with modern audiences. For example, numerous tales surround the malicious figure known as Staalo. Mäkinen hopes his songs instill fear and fright, as evidenced by lyrics that depict Staalo wielding knives and axes, using them to attack and turn people into food. Máŧŧarus’s music is not yet publicly available, but he plans to release tracks in the fall.

In contrast, heavy musician and composer Erke Eriksen from Utsjoki currently listens to little Sámi music, citing its scarcity in the heavy metal genre. “If others aren’t doing it, I guess I have to,” he chuckles as he works on a heavy album, hoping to inspire other Sámi artists to create band music in their own language.

Festival producer Oula Guttorm of the indigenous music event Ijahis Idja is calling for more accessible Sámi music. He believes that the diversity of Sámi music should include lighter themes. Guttorm, also a planner for Sámi music initiatives, notes the growing trend among new artists who bravely blend traditional and contemporary styles, reflecting a deep appreciation for traditional Sámi music.
