The city of Reykjavík is taking responsibility for the Brákarborg preschool situation by conducting an assessment of its current housing. The Mayor announced that students will be welcomed into temporary facilities on Ármúli starting Monday.

A security assessment of the temporary building was completed, with all necessary permits expected to be issued by the end of the day. The Mayor acknowledged parents’ dissatisfaction with the situation, emphasizing the need to investigate who is accountable for the mistakes made during the preschool’s reconstruction.

Parents have expressed concerns about the suitability of the temporary facilities for preschool activities and have struggled to receive timely communication from the city regarding the matter.

The Mayor stated that preparations for receiving children at the Ármúli location are nearly complete, and parents would have the opportunity to tour the facilities before the opening. He recognized that although no one is pleased with the current arrangement, the alternative would be to deny preschool placements for the children. The Mayor reassured that the situation is temporary and aimed at addressing the immediate need.

Following a detailed inspection earlier this summer, it was discovered that the turf roof of the Brákarborg preschool is excessively heavy, leading to repair costs estimated in the millions, potentially extending the repair timeline to at least six months.

Responsibility for the incident remains unclear, and an internal review will examine where errors occurred during the renovation process, whether involving contractors, designers, or city staff. The Mayor admitted that while he bears ultimate responsibility as the head of the city’s administration, it is crucial to learn from these mistakes and ensure the safety and well-being of the children affected.
