Finland has announced the establishment of a NATO headquarters, with the specific location to be determined at the ministerial level. Olli-Poika Parviainen, the mayor of Hämeenlinna, has expressed the city’s willingness to be considered as a candidate for the headquarters.

Throughout the summer, the local government has explored the needs such a headquarters would have and assessed how Hämeenlinna could meet those requirements. Parviainen emphasized the importance of an open preparation process while respecting confidentiality regarding operational matters.

Hämeenlinna, along with the Kanta-Häme region, presents excellent logistical, geographical, and operational advantages for various headquarters activities. The city was previously recommended as the location for an army headquarters in 2004 for similar reasons, Parviainen noted. Its strategic location is well-supported by studies, making it one of the best logistical sites in Finland and the Nordics, with less than an hour’s access to two international airports and proximity to several ports.

The city is also part of the North Sea Baltic transport corridor, contributing to Finland’s security infrastructure, and is actively involved in the Define project led by Riihimäki, which enhances the defense ecosystem in Southern Finland. Parviainen highlighted the various defense sectors, training areas, and strong presence of the defense industry in Hämeenlinna, which positions it as a viable garrison city.

Furthermore, the city is committed to providing family-friendly living conditions, showcasing its reputation as Finland’s first child-friendly municipality, rich cultural opportunities, numerous sports clubs, and a newly developing central hospital. With an international university and tailored education paths for children, Hämeenlinna aims to be an ideal home for the families of NATO personnel.
