Weather front brings heavy rain and thunderstorms from Norway to Sweden and Finland

A significant weather front, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, is gradually moving from Norway to Sweden and then to Finland. This weather pattern is expected to bring intense rain and severe thunderstorm gusts, especially on Saturday.

According to meteorologist Matti Huutonen, the incoming front will result in notable rainfall: “There is certainly substantial precipitation on the way. One could say the weather will feel quite autumnal, though we are not yet calling it fall.”

This change is concerning for events scheduled over the weekend, such as the Flow and Hellsinki Metal Festivals in Helsinki, where attendees should prepare for rain. However, attendees of the Simerock festival in Rovaniemi can expect drier and warmer conditions, as Lapland is predicted to be the driest and warmest area on Saturday.

On Friday, much of the country will enjoy sunny and dry weather, potentially marking the 54th heat wave day of the summer, with temperatures expected to reach high levels nationwide. A more subdued weather band has already spread into western Finland, introducing scattered showers.

The intense rainfall is expected to arrive during the night and morning hours of Saturday, affecting southern and western parts of Finland. Huutonen has warned there could be severe thunderstorm gusts accompanying the rains, especially around South and Central Finland, with rainfall intensities reaching over 20 millimeters per hour in some areas, potentially up to 40 millimeters locally.

Saturday will see a drop in temperatures, averaging around 20 degrees Celsius, despite no dramatic cooling expected. The low-pressure system will linger over Finland into Sunday, maintaining a volatile and rainy weather pattern across much of the country.
