Filming of a feature film inspired by the Kalevala will begin this September in Nurmes, North Karelia. The movie, titled “Kalevala: The Story of Kullervo,” is a historical drama influenced by a new edition of Elias Lönnrot’s classic work. Directed by Antti J. Jokinen, the film stars Elias Salonen as Kullervo and Eero Aho as Untamo. This marks Salonen’s first leading role in a feature film; he is known for his appearances in TV series such as “Aikuiset” and “Piiritys,” the latter of which earned him a Golden Venla award in January.

Eero Aho, a Jussi award-winning actor, has a rich filmography including titles like “Tuntematon Sotilas” and “Käsky,” along with notable TV series such as “Koskinen” and “Punainen Kolmio.” Other cast members include Krista Kosonen as Ilmarinen’s wife and Ilkka Koivula as Väinö, with additional roles played by Olli Rahkonen, Johannes Holopainen, and Seela Sella.

Set in 12th century North Karelia, the story of Kullervo will primarily be filmed at the Bomban tourist area, where the film’s main partner, the North Karelia Cooperative Society, recently completed a striking hotel expansion. Construction is underway to create extensive sets resembling 12th-century architecture, including houses and granaries. After the film’s release, these sets are intended to host Kalevala-themed events.

The film’s budget is estimated at around €4.9 million, with funding support from the Finnish Film Foundation and the North Karelia regional council. The movie is set to premiere in early 2026, marking Jokinen’s return to directing following challenges faced during the production of “Omerta 6/12.”
