Researcher advises on easing back into work after vacation stress in Sweden

Returning to work after a vacation can be challenging for many individuals. Dan Hasson, a stress researcher at the Karolinska Institute, suggests that this discomfort may arise from the stress associated with change, even when the change is positive. He notes that the experience of returning can vary depending on what one is coming back to. For those who have had a turbulent vacation, feelings of relief may be prevalent, especially if there were difficulties in personal relationships or the demands of caring for young children.

Hasson emphasizes the importance of easing back into work rather than trying to jump back in at full capacity immediately. The brain, having enjoyed a period of rest, may require some time to adjust and recover, much like a muscle that needs to be gradually warmed up. He compares the brain’s needs to physical training, highlighting that just as one wouldn’t start exercising at maximum intensity, the brain also needs a calm start upon returning to work.

In addition, he advises taking time to transition smoothly back into the work environment to avoid stress. For more insights on managing post-vacation stress, additional tips are available in related segments.
