Sweden maintains bag ban at public events amid ongoing terrorism threat

Since November 1 of last year, Sweden has implemented a ban on all types of bags at public events, a measure justified by the elevated threat level of terrorism, which was raised approximately a year ago. This prohibition includes bags of all sizes, although diaper and medical bags are exempt. Officials noted concerns about security at various gatherings and engaged with event organizers, who responded positively to the idea of implementing a ban.

According to officials, Sweden remains a high-priority target, and as long as the threat level stays at Level Four, this ban will remain in place. However, in mid-July, some leniency was introduced; the ban is no longer mandatory for all major events and may vary based on circumstances, such as increased police presence or the deployment of more security personnel.

Despite these adjustments, there are currently no plans to permit smaller handbags. Officials stated that they regularly consult with national security authorities to reassess the conditions surrounding the bag ban, which may change frequently.

Evaluating the effectiveness of the ban presents challenges, as officials find it difficult to measure its impact directly. However, it is believed that this restriction complicates potential attack plans. Additionally, the entrance process has generally become quicker, reducing wait times outside venues, which can serve as targets for terrorists.

There is a sentiment that many segments of society may not fully grasp the seriousness of the current threat level, underscoring the necessity of maintaining the bag ban for public safety.
