A new social media platform, Threads, is gaining popularity in Finland, where users share personal stories and struggles in a supportive environment. Founded by Meta Platforms, Inc., Threads launched a year ago as a competitor to Twitter, now known as X. It has attracted around 175 million monthly visitors since its inception, promoting open discussions about health, relationships, and daily challenges within a 500-character limit. This shift towards a text-focused platform contrasts sharply with the image-centric nature of Instagram.

Social psychologist Suvi Uski attributes the rise of Threads to a growing demand for more genuine, unfiltered communication online. Users like entrepreneur Mikko Toiviainen have found that the atmosphere on Threads fosters empathy and constructive dialogue, reminiscent of early Facebook, where people connected over shared experiences and concerns.

The platform has notably minimized political discourse, focusing instead on community support. Uski explains that the interconnectedness of users, often accompanied by friends and family, encourages more considerate sharing. Threads’ algorithm rewards users for opening up about personal topics, further enhancing the sense of visibility and community.

Despite Finnish stereotypes of being reserved, Threads appears to challenge this, providing a space for vulnerability and connection. As the platform continues to grow, users are reminded to share responsibly, ensuring their posts reflect what they would be comfortable sharing publicly. The increasing engagement on Threads underscores a desire for deeper social connections in an age dominated by polished online personas.
