Finnish President Sauli Niinistö emphasized that many Finns may take peace for granted, a perspective he considers outdated. In his view, the importance of peace must be better understood, especially as Finland faces evolving security challenges as a border state.

Niinistö spoke at the Kotkanniemi Forum in Luumäki, held at the former home museum of President P. E. Svinhufvud. He expressed concern that Finland is already experiencing an escalated security situation pointing to various disturbing actions in the region, which are often subtle and difficult to trace. He highlighted the unsolved explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline from over a year ago as a troubling example.

The President stressed the need for Finland to invest in security infrastructure and support for those who provide safety, stating, “We must be strong now, not to engage in war but to avoid it.” Niinistö also pointed out that Finland must project strength beyond its borders.

Additionally, Niinistö addressed NATO funding, arguing that European countries must contribute more financially. He noted that despite its small population, Finland contributes significantly more to NATO relative to its size than many other nations. If the United States decides to reduce its contributions to NATO, he believes European nations must increase their support.

Regarding the upcoming U.S. presidential elections, Niinistö expressed confidence that the outcome will not drastically affect NATO relations between Finland and the United States, as both major political parties in the U.S. have long insisted on European nations taking responsibility for NATO commitments.

The Kotkanniemi Forum is available for live viewing on Yle Areena.
