Sara Fossaas Aarsland, a 23-year-old from Tyristrand, is pursuing a one-year logistics program through the Norwegian School of Logistics while residing in Kristiansand. She opted for online studies to maintain her job and social connections in Kristiansand, citing a desire for a broader selection of courses than what was available at the University of Agder.

Online and flexible studies have gained popularity, especially after the pandemic, largely due to economic factors such as high housing costs and the need to balance work with education. In Southern Norway, flexible options in early childhood education, social work, and nursing are particularly sought after, with a new online biology program attracting significant interest.

Aarsland acknowledges the challenges of networking in an online setting. “If my study hadn’t been digital, I likely would have chosen another online program or one in Kristiansand,” she stated. While she has a solid support network from three years of study, she admits missing in-person lectures.

The University of Agder has seen an increase in applicants for various programs, with its new online biology program receiving 124 applications for only 30 spots. Interest skyrocketed once the program transitioned online, according to Hilde Inntjore, the university’s vice rector for education. Financial challenges faced by students also play a crucial role in this shift.

The Molde University College reports a surge in applicants for its flexible online programs, with the logistics course receiving 397 applications this year, a marked increase from previous years. According to Øystein Nerland, the flexibility offered by these programs makes it easier for students to manage their studies alongside other commitments.

While student organizations support flexible learning, they express concerns regarding the potential lack of traditional student experiences and networking opportunities.
