The sounds of Helsinki’s trams are set to resonate in new locations as Line 13 begins operation on August 12. This line stretches from Sompasaari to Kalasatama, passing through Hermanni and continuing to Pasila. It connects two major transit hubs: the Kalasatama metro station and Pasila station, with a travel time of just 12 minutes.

The total length of Line 13 is 6.5 kilometers, and it completes its route in approximately 21-22 minutes. In a media event on Tuesday, officials highlighted the blend of features on this line, combining elements of a light rail and a tram. The route includes dense urban areas along with longer stops, allowing for quick travel between key points.

Anni Sinnemäki, the Deputy Mayor for Urban Environment, anticipates that this line will quickly become one of Helsinki’s most popular, with estimates of four to five million passengers annually. “This enhances both Kalasatama and Pasila’s connectivity,” she noted.

Attention to green construction along the new tram route has been significant, particularly at the Haukilahdenkatu stop, where visitors can enjoy landscaping and pollinator spots. Sinnemäki described the tram as an attractive public transport option, particularly with newer trams featuring comfort, good lighting, and air conditioning.

The project budget was capped at €78 million, and current estimates suggest that expenses will remain below this threshold. Street modifications for the line began in 2021 and are expected to conclude by June 2024. Aside from Line 59, which will see the end stop moved from Sompasaari to Herttoniemi, other bus routes will not be affected by the introduction of Line 13.
