In a recent announcement, Icelandair revealed that it transported a record 610,000 passengers in July, marking the highest monthly figure ever for the airline. This surpasses the prior record of 577,000 passengers in July 2017. In comparison to July of the previous year, when 566,000 passengers were flown, this represents an 8% increase year-over-year.

Despite an overall decrease in demand for travel to Iceland, the airline has focused more on connecting passengers, resulting in nearly a one-third increase in their numbers this year. The company’s CEO noted that the 8% increase in passenger numbers for July is noteworthy, especially in light of the lower overall demand for travel to Iceland compared to last year.

In July, over 207,000 passengers traveled to Iceland, a drop of 11% from 232,000 in the same month last year. However, there was minimal change in the number of passengers leaving the country, totaling just over 88,000. In contrast, the number of connecting passengers flying over the Atlantic via Iceland soared to over 292,000, a remarkable 31% increase from 224,000 the previous year.

Looking at the annual trend, the overall number of passengers traveling directly to Iceland has declined by 10%, while those passing through as connecting passengers have grown by 31%. Additionally, domestic flight numbers have slightly decreased by 3%, totaling just over 22,000 in July compared to over 23,000 last year.
