Parents in Akureyri demand more summer activities for children as officials prepare for next year

Parents in Akureyri are expressing dissatisfaction over the limited summer activities available for younger children. They particularly note a lack of options in August, as schools do not reopen until the end of the month. The mayor has acknowledged hearing about the issue this summer and indicated that it will be investigated in preparation for next year’s summer.

Björn Grétar Baldursson, chairman of the Brekkuskóli Parents’ Association, emphasizes the need for a child-friendly and parent-friendly community, highlighting that many parents cannot take long vacations during the ten-week school break. He pointed out that not all parents have adequate local support, making it essential to consider their needs during this period.

Although various specialized activities, such as sailing and sports, are available, most of these cater to specific interests and may not suit all children. Björn advocates for broader options, suggesting that programs should allow children to explore different sports rather than focusing on just one, thereby appealing to a wider range of students.

Mayor Heimir Örn Árnason noted that municipal summer programs for children have historically been scarce. However, with significant summer sports programs being discontinued this year, he recognizes the need for thorough evaluation before next summer. As Akureyri’s officials consider the available options, parents remain hopeful for an increase in summer activity offerings for their children in the future.
