The annual Þjóðhátíð festival in Vestmannaeyjar successfully concluded without major incidents, despite adverse weather conditions. As the first visitors began to leave the island via the Herjólf ferry service, local police chief Karl Gauti Hjaltason confirmed that the event proceeded safely this year.

The weather posed challenges, with high winds prompting the opening of a shelter, Herjólfshöll, where approximately 500 individuals sought refuge. During this time, the hall was nearly at full capacity in the afternoon, with only a few attendees departing, while many others remained inside. Despite the weather, thousands camped out in tents, most of which held up well against the elements.

This year’s festival reported fewer drug-related incidents. There were some alcohol-related issues throughout the event, as well as minor assaults, but nothing particularly severe. Notably, there were no reports of sexual crimes reaching the police.

Morning ferry trips commenced today, though there was ample space available on the boat, as many festival-goers were slow to rise after the celebration. Karl Gauti noted that the previous ferries were not fully booked. He suggested that some people who were on standby may have left the island the prior evening.

Overall, the successful handling of the festival amidst challenging weather contributed to a positive outlook for the local community and its events.
