Weather warnings issued across Iceland as low-pressure system impacts regions

Monday 5th 2024 on 09:53 in
Iceland

Weather warnings are in effect until Tuesday due to a low-pressure system moving southwest from just south of Reykjanes. This shift will decrease the strong winds experienced overnight, although conditions will still remain blustery in the northwest, creating potentially hazardous situations for vehicles susceptible to high winds.

Wind warnings are currently in place for Breiðafjörður, the Westfjords, Strandir, and Northwestern Iceland. Drivers in these areas are advised to exercise caution, especially if their vehicles or trailers are vulnerable to gusts.

Rain is expected in several regions, progressing northwest across the country today. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated in Strandir and the East Fjords, with the possibility of downpours. This increased precipitation may lead to landslides or rockfalls in those areas, prompting advice for travelers to stay away from steep mountain slopes, riverbanks, and dangerous fords. Additionally, yellow weather warnings are active due to the risk of landslides.

By this evening, rainfall is expected to diminish in the eastern part of the country, while an easing of conditions will occur in the west overnight. Tomorrow, a more stable weather pattern is expected, although cloudy skies and occasional drizzle will persist across most regions. The country will see relatively mild temperatures shortly after the weekend; however, a cooling trend is likely as the week progresses, particularly in northern highland areas.

Current yellow warnings are widely effective throughout the country, with the wind warning for Breiðafjörður set to be lifted around 9 AM today.
