The presence of swan cygnets at Slotssøen in Kolding has diminished, leaving local residents puzzled and concerned. Just a few weeks ago, a group of cygnets could be seen swimming near Koldinghus, but they have since vanished. Finn Slemming, a local resident who enjoys cycling and walking around the lake, has expressed his confusion regarding their disappearance.

Opinions abound regarding the cause, with Slemming suspecting predators as potential culprits. “There are various theories, but I believe the worst offenders are the seagulls,” he remarked, emphasizing that they consume nearly everything. The disappearance of the cygnets has sparked considerable discussion on a Facebook group about Kolding, accumulating over 250 comments. Many speculate about the involvement of a large pike, although this remains unconfirmed.

Swan enthusiasts like Slemming feel a sense of loss. “The swan is a beautiful bird, and it’s also our national bird. It’s strange not to see any cygnets here,” he stated. Nature guide Jørn Chemnitz believes the otters in the area may be responsible for the swan’s decline, citing numerous sightings around Kolding. “I’ve seen at least six or eight road-killed otters within city limits, so they are definitely present,” he explained.

Despite ongoing speculation, no one has observed either the otters or pikes preying on the cygnets. The fate of these young swans remains uncertain, leaving residents like Slemming feeling helpless and saddened. “Sometimes you can only watch and feel powerless,” he lamented.
