Brotherhood of War Invalids Activities Set to Cease in Finland by August 2025

A significant part of Finnish organizational history is set to fade as the activities of the Brotherhood of War Invalids are expected to cease. While there is no official confirmation of the termination date, plans suggest that operations may conclude in August 2025, coinciding with the organization’s 85th anniversary.

In many regions, the activities of the provincial branches have already been dismantled, replaced by heritage associations. The women’s branches have disappeared entirely, except for one in Lapua, where traditions are highly valued. The vitality of this women’s group is attributed to a social network led by Marianne Hietala, which has been attracting new members. Most participants share experiences from the war era.

Hietala emphasizes the group’s purpose: “We are essentially ambassadors of peace.” As the ongoing war in Ukraine triggers memories of past conflicts, the importance of gratitude for peace is highlighted.

Marja-Leena Ketola, a Lapua resident and widow, discovered the group after her husband passed away. She felt isolated as a caregiver, but a friend encouraged her to re-engage with life. “We are all children of war,” she noted, pointing out that shared experiences and common values unite them.

Although the group enjoys daily activities filled with laughter and songs, they also preserve the memories of wars and the legacy of previous generations. Marko Hakala, director of the South Ostrobothnia district, noted the declining number of war invalids and widows, but the association continues to support them. There are still 19 war invalids and 148 widows alive in the district.

While the number of war invalids is rapidly declining, the enduring work of heritage associations is crucial for keeping their narratives alive for future generations.
