On the occasion of the annual merchant weekend, wine sales at the ÁTVR store in Skeifan revealed a minor fluctuation compared to the same weekend last year. According to the store manager, Valbjörn Helgi Viðarsson, sales of soft drinks and mixed beverages increased significantly this week.

Young people appear to be increasingly drawn to soda and mixed drink options, signaling a shift in consumer preferences. This trend was evident during this year’s merchant weekend, marking a notable change compared to previous years.

Additionally, it was reported that events such as the “Súlur Vertical” off-road race in Akureyri brought a lively atmosphere to the area, with around 300 young participants. Strong winds are expected in the western part of the country this evening and into tomorrow, prompting yellow weather warnings for southern regions.

As the merchant weekend progresses, other local stories have emerged, including rising concerns regarding the safety of prison guards amid increasing serious incidents, and efforts in search and rescue operations in Vestmannaeyjar. Meanwhile, a calm before the storm has settled over the Herjólfshellir area, as crowds gather, anticipating festive celebrations.

This weekend marks a blend of leisure activities and urgent community matters, reflecting both the vibrancy and challenges of life in Iceland’s present landscape.
