Committee recommends official cars for Prime Minister and cabinet ministers in Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

This week, a committee tasked with evaluating the allowances and pensions of the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers presented its recommendations. The committee suggests that the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers should have access to official cars.

“It is absolutely unnecessary for the state budget to incur such high expenses for transporting the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers back and forth,” stated Aksel V. Johannesen.

In Greenland, cabinet ministers receive free cars without drivers and are taxed in the same manner as other employees who benefit from company cars. In Iceland, Denmark, and Norway, cabinet ministers are provided with cars and drivers, which are tax-exempt for official duties.

The committee recommended providing the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers with official cars while eliminating the current expense reimbursement or travel allowance.

Additionally, the committee assessed that the salaries of the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers are reasonable. The Prime Minister currently earns 97,087 krónur monthly, while cabinet ministers receive 82,150 krónur. Their pension contribution stands at 15 percent.

Furthermore, cabinet ministers residing outside the capital, Tórshavn, can have their housing rental costs reimbursed when living there. The maximum reimbursement for this expense is capped at 10,000 krónur per month.
