The weather forecast indicates strong winds could disrupt visitors to the annual national festival in Vestmannaeyjar this Saturday. The Icelandic Met Office predicts wind gusts of up to 20 meters per second in the southern region, while a research institute suggests around 10 meters per second at the same time. The chair of the festival committee emphasizes the need to prepare for the worst.

Jónas Guðbjörn Jónsson, chair of the festival committee, stated that they should brace for adverse weather conditions. “We have to anticipate that it will happen. We have seen that something will always come up,” he explained, referring to prior forecasts that have shifted.

The committee has made all necessary arrangements, including a backup plan for attendees to take shelter in a sports hall if needed. Jónas also encouraged festival-goers to secure their tents well, both locals in white tents and visitors.

Despite the weather concerns, travel disruptions for the ferry service Herjólfur are not expected. The festival kicks off this evening with a traditional pre-party, and Jónas noted that visitors began arriving around midday, with most expected tomorrow. The evening holds promise, with clear skies leading to an enjoyable event. “The pre-party looks great, and the weather is pleasant for now, aiming for a fantastic celebration,” he added.
