Vestmannaeyjar is gearing up for its annual national festival this weekend, despite forecasts predicting strong winds that could impact festivities. The meteorological agency warns of wind speeds reaching 20 meters per second in the area, particularly during the morning hours on Saturday, coinciding with the holiday weekend festivities.

Jónas Guðbjörn Jónsson, the head of the festival committee, emphasizes the importance of preparing for severe weather conditions. “We have to expect the worst,” he states, highlighting past experiences where weather conditions shifted unexpectedly.

To ensure the safety of attendees, the festival committee is implementing a contingency plan that includes offering shelter in sports facilities. Jónas encourages visitors, as well as local residents, to secure their tents properly to withstand possible harsh winds.

The festival will kick off this evening with a warm-up ball attended by local residents, with many guests expected to arrive throughout the day tomorrow. Despite the weather concerns, the atmosphere remains positive, with Jónas noting, “Tonight looks promising for the warm-up ball, as conditions are pleasant right now.”

While weather warnings are in place, there are no anticipated disruptions to the ferry services operated by Herjólfur, so transport to and from the islands should proceed as scheduled.
