A murder in Kauniainen, West Uusimaa, was rooted in years of escalating jealousy, which evolved into stalking and threats of violence, according to the preliminary investigation. The incident occurred on September 8 of last year on Lippajärventie, when the suspect waited for the victim to arrive home. Upon the victim’s arrival, the suspect approached and, after the victim attempted to seek help from a neighboring residence, the suspect repeatedly assaulted them with a sharp weapon in the upper body. The alleged assailant fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The victim, a man in his sixties, succumbed to the injuries sustained from the attack. The police apprehended the suspect later that evening in Helsinki without incident. The police reported that the suspect and the victim were long-time acquaintances, and during the investigation, it was revealed that the suspect had been threatening the victim for an extended period, leading to a change in the charges from manslaughter to murder.

The prosecution is seeking a life sentence for the suspect, who was deemed to have diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime. The trial began on Thursday morning at the West Uusimaa District Court. A preparatory session for the case was held in January, where the charges were made public, and the defendant was subsequently ordered to undergo a mental evaluation.

Witnesses reported that the suspect’s jealousy began years prior, triggered by the victim and the suspect’s spouse communicating simultaneously on WhatsApp. In 2021, the suspect filed a police report against the victim, questioning the nature of their relationship. Alarmingly, the victim had solicited police protection and reported threats, indicating a prolonged history of harassment that left him feeling exhausted and fearful.
