Disagreements are causing turmoil within the Hamina summer theater team, leading to a division among its members. Ongoing conflicts have escalated to the point where performances of the musical “Loma” had to be canceled midway through the season. The disputes center around leadership roles within the theater’s parent organization, with some former board members feeling sidelined from decision-making, resulting in their reluctance to participate in the productions.

New resident Marianne Auvinen moved to Hamina to engage more actively in local theater but has expressed distress over the division within the group. “I’m sensitive, so I’ve cried a lot this past week,” she admitted. With few social connections outside of theater, Auvinen is determined to continue acting and will participate in the upcoming auditions for Hamina Theater Association’s next production.

Several long-time members have exited the summer theater due to these conflicts. Jouni Saikkonen, who previously acted in “Loma” and served on the board, described the situation as a deliberate exclusion of the previous leadership. “The experience left a bitter taste, making it hard to feel motivated to participate again anytime soon,” he said, indicating he wouldn’t take part in the upcoming auditions.

While acting remains a priority for Saikkonen, he is uncertain about the future. He mentioned having small personal plans and the possibility of joining another theater next summer if the urge arises. Both Saikkonen and Auvinen share a desire for a different outcome regarding the “Loma” production and hope for resolution among their peers. Auvinen believes that acknowledging personal mistakes could pave the way for healing and improved communication within the theater community.
