The fish processing company Kalavapriikki, based in Kuopio, has signed a long-term framework agreement for purchasing rainbow trout. The fish will be supplied by Fifax, a recirculating aquaculture facility located in Åland.

Under the terms of the framework agreement, Kalavapriikki commits to purchasing a significant portion of Fifax’s trout production, which is expected to total approximately 1.2 million gutted fish kilograms annually. Deliveries are set to begin this fall, and the contract will remain in effect indefinitely.

Fifax raises its fish using a recirculating aquaculture system in large land-based tanks. Water is pumped from the Baltic Sea and is reused in the system after undergoing purification. Production at the facility was halted in the summer of 2022 due to an outbreak of the IHN virus, but operations were resumed in March 2023. Fifax will begin delivering fish to Kuopio as soon as they reach the appropriate size for Kalavapriikki’s production process.

The framework agreement includes a €1.4 million upfront payment, which Kalavapriikki will pay in installments throughout the current fiscal year. Kalavapriikki, which specializes in fish food products, announced in May that it plans to move its operations to larger facilities in Kelloniemi, Kuopio.
