E45 road damaged and 20 vehicles stranded in Western Sweden following heavy rainfall

Tuesday 30th 2024 on 12:28 in
Sweden

On Sunday evening, part of the E45 road was damaged due to heavy rainfall, leaving approximately 20 vehicles stranded for several hours. Historically, Western Sweden has faced multiple significant incidents of landslides and flooding, including the Tuveskredet landslide in November 1977 in Tuve, Gothenburg, which resulted in the loss of nine lives when the ground under a residential area collapsed.

According to state geologist Christian Öhrling, specific areas warrant closer monitoring for future risks, particularly along the mountain range where ski resorts are expanding. He noted that these developments create conditions conducive to mudflows.

Efforts to reopen affected sections of the E45 are underway, with some parts expected to be accessible by Tuesday. As recovery efforts continue, aerial footage has revealed the extent of the damage on the highway.
