Savonlinna hosts demonstration to protect local hospital services in Finland

On the occasion of its anniversary, the city of Savonlinna organized a demonstration advocating for the preservation of its local hospital. The Savonlinna Central Hospital is facing potential service reductions as part of government budget-cutting measures. The community has previously protested against service cuts, but this event was officially arranged by the city. The last such demonstration organized by the city occurred in 2016 in defense of a teacher education institution, which ultimately closed in 2018 despite large crowds opposing the decision.

On Monday, approximately 500 people gathered at Kirkkopuisto in Savonlinna, according to police estimates. The initiative for the protest was put forth by the Savonlinna City Council, receiving unanimous support from all 43 council members. City Council Chair Terho Kaskinen emphasized that this cross-party agreement underscores the serious nature of the issue, voicing concerns that the government’s proposals threaten fundamental social services.

The government’s proposal suggests closing around-the-clock specialized emergency services at the Savonlinna hospital, which is expected to further diminish healthcare services available in the area. Local residents are anxious about the hospital’s future, especially those from neighboring municipalities, such as Raimo and Arja Kettunen, who rely on Savonlinna for their nearest medical services.

Healthcare professional Helena Niiranen noted that the local community has a significant need for these services. Citizens fear that cuts might lead to increased feelings of insecurity. Marika Siili, attending the event with her young child, highlighted the challenges of traveling further for healthcare, especially for parents with small children.
