Bus driver released from travel ban in Öxnadal accident investigation

A bus driver involved in a rollover accident in Öxnadal has been released from a travel ban but remains a suspect in the case. The accident occurred on June 14, when a bus carrying 22 Czech nationals, including the driver, veered off the road and overturned near Fagranes, resulting in seven injuries, two of which were severe.

As of yesterday, the travel ban imposed on the driver has expired, and no extension has been sought. However, he still holds the status of a suspect in the ongoing investigation, which is reportedly advanced. The police originally enforced the travel ban due to the driver’s tourist status and lack of connections to Iceland, leading to concerns he might leave the country. The police have since determined that an extension of the travel ban is unnecessary, although it remains a possibility.

Additionally, the operator of the Czech travel company, Adventura, is also considered a suspect in the investigation. He has been questioned but is currently not in Iceland. The police inquiry is examining whether the driver acted negligently regarding the bus’s equipment or condition. If found guilty, he could face fines or imprisonment for up to four years. The case is also being reviewed by the Icelandic Transport Accident Investigation Board.
