The Ring Road at Skálm has recently reopened after repairs were completed by the Road Administration. The road had been severely damaged east of the Skálm River, prompting repairs that began early this morning. The reopening, restricted to a single lane with on-site traffic management, commenced shortly before 9 PM. After traffic from the east is allowed through, which is expected to take about 20-30 minutes, traffic from the west will be permitted.

Construction crews worked diligently throughout the day to restore the road. Initially, there were concerns that the bridge might withstand the damage, but it remained intact. Significant damage occurred over a 700-meter stretch near the breach. Despite the reopening tonight, ongoing work on the heavily damaged section will continue in the coming days.

Notably, this incident marks the fourth major glacial outburst flood from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier since the Katla eruption in 1918. Although the latest outburst was significant, it appeared to be less severe than previous events, according to experts.

Traffic congestion has increased since the road was closed, with many opting to detour. Authorities have cautioned drivers to remain attentive and follow traffic management instructions, emphasizing that while the situation is manageable, the heavy flow of vehicles is above normal levels.

Travelers are advised to monitor road conditions on the official traffic website, as a yellow weather warning remains in effect for the region, signaling potential flooding in rivers and streams.
