A significant number of participants took part in the SlutWalk yesterday, marching from Hallgrímskirkja to Austurvöllur. Organizers emphasized that the fight against rape culture and injustice continues.

SlutWalks, which began globally in 2011 in response to a Canadian police officer’s remarks suggesting women should avoid dressing “like sluts,” have spread across the world. Lísa Margrét Gunnarsdóttir, a co-organizer, highlighted the event’s importance for solidarity among survivors and the ongoing battle against sexual violence. “This is primarily a solidarity march. For those who attend every year, it’s an opportunity to reclaim their shame and feel surrounded by people who believe in them, at least for one day.”

Lísa explained her personal connection to the event, noting, “I had to stand as a survivor, and for the first time, I really opened up about my experience.” She admitted to crying each year, but also finding joy and a chance to dance and scream.

Yesterday’s march saw a large turnout, and a program was held at Austurvöllur where participants were invited to share their stories, which were then read aloud. Due to a high volume of submissions, organizers had to stop accepting more stories. Margrét Baldursdóttir, another co-organizer, expressed satisfaction with the preparation and the support from artists. She stated that the most important aspect of the march is the solidarity it fosters among survivors, noting, “This is what the march is about: reclaiming our shame and saying it out loud.”
