Oslo EV owners struggle with unclear charging costs amid calls for regulatory reform

Electric vehicle (EV) owners in Oslo are facing challenges when it comes to understanding charging costs, with many unsure of how much they are actually paying for rapid charging. A recent study reveals that three out of four EV drivers struggle to find pricing information before charging their vehicles. Currently, there is no centralized system providing real-time charging costs, and many charging stations do not display rates clearly.

Most charging providers require users to navigate through apps or scan QR codes to access pricing, and often, customers only discover the cost after they have begun charging. This lack of transparency has prompted calls for clearer regulations. Christina Bu, General Secretary of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, emphasizes that clearer pricing information would enhance competition and allow consumers to know what they should expect to pay for charging services.

The government’s National Charging Strategy, presented in December 2022, highlighted the need for easier access to pricing details. However, progress has been slow, and even the Minister of Children and Families, Kjersti Toppe, expressed frustration over the lack of accessible charging pricing, stating it is “unacceptable” that consumers are left in the dark regarding costs. Toppe assured that new regulations are on the horizon, with a consultation proposal expected this fall.

While waiting for a more systematic approach, Uno-X has proactively addressed the issue by displaying prices for electricity alongside those for gasoline and diesel at their stations. Ole Johannes Tønnessen, head of Uno-X E-Mobility, remarked that this simple solution leverages technology that has been available for over 20 years.
