Vacations should focus on enjoyment, says researcher Anette Harris from University of Bergen

Many people tend to pack too much into their vacation time, creating unnecessary stress. Anette Harris, a researcher and professor at the University of Bergen, highlights the external pressures that can shadow holiday plans. She emphasizes the importance of understanding what individuals truly wish to get out of their time off. “If you’re a large family traveling together, it’s essential to communicate beforehand. Some may need a long trip, while others might crave some solitude,” she advises.

Tourist Gøril Henriksen from Harstad echoes this sentiment, acknowledging that the short duration of summer vacations often leads to a rush to maximize experiences. “With only a month of vacation, it’s natural to feel pressured to do as much as possible,” she notes, suggesting that people should focus on activities they genuinely enjoy.

To alleviate stress during holidays, Harris offers several tips:

1. **Discuss Goals**: Start with a discussion about what everyone hopes to gain from the vacation.

2. **Set Realistic Expectations**: Be mindful of what you can realistically achieve during your time off.

3. **Divide the Vacation**: If possible, split the vacation into shorter periods to avoid burnout upon returning to work.

4. **Prioritize Energy-Boosting Activities**: Engage in activities that energize you, rather than solely focusing on relaxation.

5. **Limit Social Media Influence**: Recognize the pressures that come from social media, particularly for parents with teenagers, and focus instead on what benefits your family.

At a campsite in Drammen, Anne and Svein-Roar Rokke from Bodø believe well-planned vacations can prevent stress. They maintain that returning from a holiday feeling exhausted is a sign of over-scheduling. “Do something different, but take it easy and enjoy yourselves,” they advise.
