The Finnish heavy metal band Tarot has returned to the stage this year, performing to full arenas after a concert hiatus lasting over a decade. Lead singer and sampler Tommi Salmela reflects on their comeback, recalling the warmth of performing for 23,000 fans at the Tuska Festival, with hands raised in excitement.

Tarot made its return at the Old Farts Rock charity event in Kuopio last year, sparking enthusiasm among band members to schedule more performances. They secured a contract for six shows with booking agencies. However, juggling multiple jobs related to performances and recording poses a logistical challenge for the band.

“Multiple teams have coordinated the musicians’ schedules for Tarot’s concerts, which involves sorting out overnight accommodations and various other arrangements,” said guitarist Sakari Hietala.

Founded in 1982, Tarot boasts decades of experience in live performances, with members including singer Marko Hietala, guitarist Sakari Hietala, keyboardist Janne Tolsa, singer Tommi Salmela, and drummer Antero Seppänen. The band observes a notable growth in rock festivals each year.

Salmela points to Nummirock as an example of this shift, mentioning how the event has expanded musically over the years. He expresses some concern over whether there will be enough audience for all festivals.

As Tarot gears up for their performance at Kuopiorock on Saturday and prepares for a show in Alicante, Spain, band members plan to take a break after the summer concert season. While they are open to recording new material, finding time amidst various commitments is complex. Hietala acknowledges they have ideas and demos, but emphasizes ensuring quality is paramount. Salmela adds there’s no rush, as they have seen and done a lot together over time.
