Reykjavík preschool faces major renovations due to structural issues

Reykjavík is facing significant renovations at the Brákarborg preschool, which opened two years ago in a newly constructed facility. The cost of repairs is expected to reach tens of millions of Icelandic krónur. The head of the city’s Environmental and Planning Department indicated that there are issues with the building’s structure.

Brákarborg moved into its newly built location on Kleppsvegur in the fall of 2022, previously occupied by a sex toy store. The construction of the preschool cost nearly 1.3 billion krónur. In the fall of 2022, it received the Green Shovel award for being built with outstanding environmental and sustainability practices. However, just under two years after its opening, the preschool has been temporarily closed, and the staff and children will relocate to temporary premises in Ármúla.

The problems stem from cracks discovered in the walls and structural deficiencies, particularly regarding the weight of the roof, which necessitates reinforcement of both the roof and the walls. Inspectors found that the roof does not meet current design standards, which has prompted immediate renovations. The city’s implementation of stringent oversight during construction is now under scrutiny as officials investigate who holds responsibility for these construction issues.

While families are expressing discontent with the decision to relocate the preschool, especially regarding the suitability of the temporary facilities, officials acknowledge the challenges this transition poses. Children are slated to start the school year at the new location on August 12, rather than the initially planned date of August 8. The city is focusing on ensuring the children’s return to their original preschool is a top priority.
