Tórshavn Municipality launches program to address daycare personnel shortage in Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

For several years, there has been a shortage of qualified personnel in the daycare sector in the Faroe Islands. In February, the first cohort of students working in the daycare field within Tórshavn Municipality began a merit-based program leading to a professional bachelor’s degree.

The course mainly takes place online; however, students will also attend shorter periods of in-person classes in Viborg, Denmark.

Students will receive a salary while working, in addition to having their travel and accommodation costs covered for their time in Denmark. However, they will not receive payment while attending classes in Denmark.

Tórshavn Municipality plans to once again offer salary support to individuals in the daycare sector this winter while they pursue their education, according to Annfinn Brekkstein, chairman of the cultural committee in Tórshavn Municipality.

In a new initiative, Tórshavn Municipality has invited other municipalities in the country to participate in this program.
