This weekend, the shores of Näverniemi in Ivalo will host a thrilling watercross competition, where snowmobiles and their drivers will face unique challenges. The event, set on the Ivalo River, is expected to draw around 2,000 spectators, and it is common for multiple snowmobiles to sink during the competition, adding excitement to the atmosphere. Divers will be on hand to ensure the safety of both participants and vehicles submerged in the river.

Juha Kreivi, from the Inari Sports Divers team, has emphasized their team’s preparedness. If a snowmobile sinks and the driver is still afloat, the divers will not intervene initially. However, in the worst-case scenario, if the driver goes under, the divers will respond immediately. Fortunately, such dire situations have not yet occurred, although there have been close calls.

The diving team includes a surface rescuer, a boat captain, and a dive leader, all present throughout the event, alongside a backup diver equipped and ready for action. There’s a specialized rescue raft developed by the Upper Lapland Snowmobilers, allowing quick retrieval operations.

Competition rules dictate that during a rescue, no engines on boats or snowmobiles can be running, as any movement could pose additional risks. The visibility in the river is often poor, and strong currents can complicate rescues, making divers approach submerged snowmobiles from upstream for safety.

With 76 teams registered, the two-day event features various categories, including open, semi-pro, recreational, and under-600cc classes. Preliminary heats take place on Friday, with finals set for Saturday, showcasing the skill and bravery of the participants as they navigate the icy waters.
