Mannfólkið breytist í slím festival begins in Óseyri, Akureyri

A three-day music festival, Mannfólkið breytist í slím, will kick off this evening at Óseyri in Akureyri, emphasizing a diverse range of music from local artists.

The festival, launched in 2018 as a modest event, has grown significantly over the years. Organizers explain that they originally brought instruments and equipment from the rehearsal space of the MBS consortium, which now hosts the festival. “It has truly evolved into a three-day celebration,” says one of the organizers, Jón Haukur Unnarsson.

From the outset, the festival has aimed to highlight North Icelandic musicians, with only a handful of acts coming from elsewhere. Jón points out that other town and arts festivals across the country traditionally feature performers from the capital region. “We have turned that concept on its head,” he notes.

Taking place at Óseyri, there are no ticket sales; instead, attendees are encouraged to make voluntary donations. The program includes seventeen performances spread over the following three evenings, and given the previous years’ atmosphere, Jón anticipates an exceptional entertainment experience. “We also strive to book acts that merge music and performance art, or those that emphasize lively and perhaps unconventional stage presentations,” he adds.

The festival’s schedule is available online, showcasing an exciting lineup designed to foster a vibrant atmosphere in Akureyri.
