Yesterday, the residents of Ísafjarðarbær were treated to a unique experience as they visited the Norwegian Prima cruise ship, the largest vessel to dock at the port. This marked the ship’s seventh visit to Ísafjörður this summer, providing an unusual opportunity for local harbor workers, known as “endamen,” to explore its impressive amenities, which include a racetrack, swimming pools, and a theater.

Typically, harbor masters do not invite staff, apart from top officials, to board cruise ships. However, Heimir G. Hansson, director of the Tourist Information Center in Ísafjörður, noted that the ship’s captain offered this special invitation as recognition of the endamen’s hard work. These workers play a crucial role in mooring the ship safely, often handling heavy and sturdy lines.

While usually six endamen are deployed, they work as a team to secure the ship both at the bow and stern, using a specialized winch. Heimir mentioned that the Norwegian Prima’s captain was impressed by the efficiency of the team, stating he had never seen such swift action in European ports.

During their visit, the team, including Kamil Svanberg and other endamen, enjoyed learning about the ship’s operations and even had the chance to experience some of the entertainment it offers, such as go-kart racing and a thrilling water slide. Kamil described the experience as reminiscent of being in a Disney movie, highlighting the ship’s outdoor spaces and festive atmosphere. The group was also treated to a delicious lunch onboard. Kamil, who enjoys his varied role at the harbor, encouraged others to embrace such opportunities regardless of gender or background.
