Residents of Akureyri are expressing deep concern over the potential closure of the town’s sole remaining cinema, Nýja bíó. The cinema, located in a historic building from 1929, has been under the management of Sambíóin, which recently decided to put the venue up for sale. The managing director clarified that this decision is not due to challenges in operating the cinema in the northern region but rather to redirect focus toward the company’s cinemas in the capital area.

The closure of the cinema, which followed the shutdown of another cinema in the town two years ago, would leave the local community without a movie theater. Many young residents view the cinema as a crucial form of entertainment that is vital for the town’s social life.

With the local population reluctant to accept the prospect of losing their only cinema, there are hopes that community members may rally to take over the management of Nýja bíó to preserve this cultural hub. The situation underscores the significant role local cinemas play in regional cities, providing not just entertainment but also a communal space for gatherings and cultural engagement.
