Jens Peter Vestergaard, the oldest living man in Denmark, passed away peacefully at the age of 110, as confirmed by his son, Hans Henning Vestergaard. Achieving such an extraordinary age is a rarity, as Vestergaard lived 30 years longer than the average man.

In a visit earlier this spring, shortly before his birthday, Vestergaard humorously remarked, “You just have to live long enough” when asked about reaching such an age. Throughout his life, he remained physically active, cycling approximately 25 kilometers daily for work, taking brisk evening walks, and enjoying hiking during vacations. His son believes that this commitment to physical activity greatly contributed to Vestergaard’s ability to celebrate 110 birthdays.

Born on April 26, 1914, Vestergaard experienced significant historical events, including two World Wars and the advent of television in Danish homes. Reflecting on turning 110, he stated, “It doesn’t feel any different. There’s no pain anywhere.”

Additionally, Vestergaard’s long life may have been influenced by his relationships; studies suggest that single men live, on average, seven years less than their partnered counterparts. Vestergaard was married three times, enjoying companionship for a total of 70 years.

Despite leading a lifestyle conducive to longevity, he smoked cigarettes until the age of 50. However, he had not smoked for 60 years by the time of his death. Jens Peter Vestergaard leaves behind a son, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His memorial service is set to take place at Ansgars Church in Odense next Friday.
